Here are some key strategies to consider:
Start with a family tree outline: Create a basic family tree structure to serve as the backbone of your site. This will help you identify which family members you'll need to gather information about.
Collect and digitize materials: Gather photos, documents, and other physical artifacts. Scan or photograph these items to create digital versions. Be sure to organize them into folders by family branch or time period.
Record oral histories: Set up interviews with older family members to capture their stories. These can be audio or video recordings, which add a personal touch to your site.
Organize written information: Compile any written family histories, important dates, and interesting anecdotes. Consider creating a timeline of significant family events.
Verify information: Cross-check dates, names, and events with multiple sources when possible to ensure accuracy.
Create a content inventory: List all the materials you've gathered, noting any gaps in your family's story that you might want to research further.
Plan your site structure: Sketch out how you want to present your information. Will you organize by individual, by family branch, or chronologically?
Prepare content for web format: Start drafting short biographies, photo captions, and descriptions that will engage website visitors.
Remember, organizing your content effectively before building your site can save time and result in a more cohesive family history presentation. As a professional website designer, I can guide you through this process and help you structure your content in a way that will translate beautifully to a Squarespace website.

Efkere
Documenting the historic Turkish village of Efkere and the people who lived there.
When Jonathan, a passionate family history researcher, approached us, his existing website was struggling to showcase his extensive research effectively. The outdated platform made it difficult to read, update, and access on mobile devices, limiting the reach and impact of his valuable work.
To address these challenges, we created a new Squarespace website that not only made Jonathan's research more accessible but also enhanced the user experience. The new site features an intuitive layout for easy exploration, tabbed categories for efficient navigation, and a translation widget to cater to a global audience. We also incorporated engaging elements like embedded videos and parallax scrolling images.
To ensure Jonathan could maintain the site independently, we provided personalized training and ongoing support, allowing him to keep his research current and dynamic as his project grows.
The Pebble Church
Heritage-listed building situated in the rural district of Carapooee, Central Victoria.
Built in 1869, the Pebble Church was constructed from white quartz pebbles collected by miners and their families from their gold mines in the surrounding area. The community had close ties to this beloved heritage building - three generations of the same family got married here!
In 2020 the community raised funds to save the church. It is now used for community events and public and private celebrations. The association wanted a website to increase awareness about this special historic building, to allow visitors to donate online, share stories from the past and promote upcoming events.
We also held an online training session so they would feel comfortable updating the site themselves - and they have made a few edits already!
